Dental Extractions in Mount Annan
Understanding Dental Extraction
Needing a tooth removal in Narellan, Mount Annan or Campbelltown?
While we always aim to preserve natural teeth, there are times when a tooth is too damaged, infected or impacted to be saved. Dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. It may be required when a tooth is extensively decayed, fractured beyond repair, or contributing to infection or crowding. Some extractions are relatively simple, while impacted or partially erupted teeth may need a surgical approach.
At ToothSavers™ in Mount Annan, we begin with an examination and digital imaging to assess the affected tooth and surrounding structures. This helps us plan the most suitable approach for your case. After removal, we provide clear aftercare instructions and arrange reviews when needed. In some situations, we may also discuss tooth replacement options, such as bridges or implants, to support ongoing function and oral health.
When Is an Extraction Needed?
Tooth removal is always considered a last resort, but it can sometimes be the most appropriate choice for your long-term oral health. You may need an extraction if:
- A tooth is extensively decayed or fractured
- Infection has spread beyond the root canal
- There is severe crowding before orthodontic treatment
- A baby tooth is blocking permanent tooth eruption
- Gum disease has led to loosening of the tooth
- A wisdom tooth is impacted or causing ongoing problems
We assess each case carefully and explain all available options before recommending an extraction.

Common Questions About Dental Extractions
We’ll also provide education and guidance to help ensure the aligners are worn consistently as directed.
Is a tooth extraction painful?
During the procedure, we use local anaesthetic to thoroughly numb the area, so pain is minimised though pressure may still be felt. After the appointment, some soreness and swelling are expected as part of the healing process.
Over-the-counter medication is often enough to manage symptoms. At ToothSavers™, we provide aftercare instructions and are available if you have questions during recovery.
How long does it take to recover after an extraction?
Initial recovery typically takes two to three days, with full healing of the gum and bone occurring over one to two weeks. We recommend resting, eating soft foods, avoiding strenuous activity and following all post-operative instructions to support smooth healing.
Each patient’s recovery will depend on the type of extraction and their general health. We encourage you to attend any follow-up visits and to contact us if pain, swelling or bleeding continues beyond what is expected. Our role is to monitor and guide recovery where required.
Do I need to replace the tooth after it’s removed?
In many cases, replacing a missing tooth helps preserve bite function, prevent neighbouring teeth from shifting and maintain the structure of your jawbone. Treatment options may include implants, bridges or removable prosthetics, depending on your oral health and preferences.
However, some teeth—such as wisdom teeth or certain baby teeth—do not require replacement. At ToothSavers™, we assess the role of the extracted tooth within your bite and provide personalised advice on whether a replacement is recommended and which option may best suit your situation.
