Prophylaxis is a very important preventative dental care treatment and it’s a great idea to book your appointment at the same time as your general check-up. The idea of a prophylaxis is to remove hardened plaque or tartar from your teeth, reducing the risk that it will inflame and infect your gums. Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria that builds up on your teeth every day. If not thoroughly removed, plaque soon hardens into tartar. Unfortunately tartar is very hard and cannot be removed by regular brushing and flossing and the bacteria within it can infect and inflame your gums, increasing your risk of developing gum disease. Regular prophylaxis can help to reduce your risk of gum disease, a condition that is extremely common and which can cause tooth loss and may even impact your general health.
What to Expect During Prophylaxis
This treatment should be comfortable and pain-free as our hygienist will use special hand tools to carefully scrape away any areas of tartar which can build up around the base of your teeth and just in between each tooth where it can be harder to reach with a toothbrush or with dental floss. Once all the tartar has been removed, they will gently polish your teeth, creating a nice smooth surface making it that much harder for bacteria to adhere. If you run your tongue over your teeth at the end of treatment you should notice your teeth feel rather nice and clean. It’s possible they will also look a bit shinier and brighter than before as polishing helps remove some surface stains.
