Fissure sealants or dental sealants are a good way to protect your back teeth. They work by sealing the large flat chewing surfaces of your molars and premolars as these are particularly vulnerable to tooth decay due to the many intricate grooves and fissures that can easily trap food and bacteria. Sometimes these fissures will be quite deep and hard to keep clean. Fissure sealants consist of a thin, flowable plastic, similar to composite resin that is used to fill cavities. The material creates a smooth, easy-to-clean surface and is thin enough not to interfere with your bite.
Who Can Have Fissure Sealants?
We can only use this treatment on healthy teeth without any signs of decay and which don’t have any fillings. This is why treatment is often suggested for our younger patients soon after the adult back teeth have erupted. However there is no reason why adults with cavity-free teeth cannot have fissure sealants.
What is the Procedure for Fissure Sealants?
Our dentist at Tooth Savers can complete this treatment for you in one visit and you will not require any anaesthetic. Your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned before the surfaces are painted with an etching fluid. This helps to lightly roughen the areas to be sealed, creating a stronger bond between the sealant and the tooth. The etching fluid is washed of and the teeth are dried so the sealant can be painted on. It soon hardens or we may accelerate the process with a special light. Afterwards, you will be able to eat and drink normally.
