What is the Procedure for Bonding?

Dental bonding is a very quick procedure and we can normally carry this out during one appointment. We may lightly etch the area to be bonded as this will create a better bond between the composite resin and your tooth. Next, the composite resin is applied in tiny increments which are hardened using a special light. Once the area is completed, we can shape the composite resin before gently polishing it.

We will sometimes combine bonding with recontouring, a process where we will remove a minimal amount of tooth enamel to help create a more pleasing and balanced cosmetic effect. This does not harm your teeth but can enhance the effects of dental bonding.

How Long Will Bonding Last?

Bonding should last for several years, but composite resin can become stained. Good dental hygiene and regular prophylaxis will help keep bonded teeth looking better for longer. The rate of staining will depend on your lifestyle habits, as for example if you smoke you can expect areas that have been bonded to discolour more quickly.
