What is Gum Disease and how is it Treated?
Gum disease is a common problem and is a bacterial infection that can destroy gum tissue and the bone surrounding teeth. To treat gum disease, we need to try to eradicate the infection or will control it by eliminating the bacteria in the gums and by removing badly diseased tissues.
How Can Laser Therapy Help?
Laser therapy is a very good way of treating gum disease as it provides our dentists with a far greater degree of precision when removing damaged tissue. This enables us to leave more of the healthy tissue intact. At the same time, laser energy automatically seals any small blood vessels that may be cut during treatment, a process that is called thermal coagulation. There is less bleeding during and after treatment and there is less swelling during healing as laser therapy doesn’t damage the surrounding gum tissue.
Overall, healing times should be faster and you’ll find this type of treatment far more comfortable as there will be no need for stitches and the risk of infection is reduced. Often we will not need to use any local anaesthetic. The great thing about laser dentistry is that it also helps to sterilise the areas being treated, reaching deep into the pockets in between your teeth and gums and eliminating greater numbers of bacteria from infected areas. Our laser can treat both soft and hard tissues so it’s extremely versatile. Treatment is very safe and is often quicker than conventional therapy for advanced gum disease or periodontal disease.
