What Is a Filling?
A filling is a procedure to restore strength and structure to a tooth that may have been damaged due to decay or to trauma. It’s vital to repair a damaged tooth as any loss of structure will weaken it so there is a greater risk that when you bite down on something it could crack. In addition, a damaged tooth will no longer be protected by hard tooth enamel, increasing the risk of infection.
By restoring a tooth with a filling, you’ll be replacing any structure that may have been lost, ensuring the tooth looks good and you’ll be able to bite and chew properly without any fear of damaging your tooth any further.
What Type of Materials Will Be Used to Fill My Tooth?
We prefer to use tooth coloured materials to restore damaged teeth, including the very latest composite resins that come in a large range of shades so it is very easy for our dentists here at Tooth Savers to closely match your filling to the rest of your natural tooth.
Composite resin fillings can be placed during one appointment. Our dentist will remove a minimal amount of tooth material when preparing the cavity, before gradually applying the composite resin in small increments. This allows us to create a beautiful filling that will blend in with your natural teeth and often we will use more than one shade of material. The composite is then hardened and polished and will be ready to use.
