Why Is Fluoride Important?
Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally and it’s found in some drinking supplies and in certain foods. Fluoride is particularly important for young teeth and it’s vital that your child receives just the right amount of fluoride while their adult teeth are developing. Fluoride helps increase the hardness of tooth enamel so teeth are more resistant to tooth decay.
We may suggest your child has fluoride treatments in our dental practice, particularly if they are more susceptible towards tooth decay. Fluoride can easily be given in the form of professional strength mouthwash that they’ll simply need to swish around their mouth at the end of a checkup, or we can use mouth trays that are filled with fluoride gel or foam and which are worn for several minutes so the fluoride can penetrate their teeth. Another treatment is to use fluoride varnish and this is painted onto clean teeth and is left to penetrate for several hours or even overnight before being brushed off. If necessary, we can also prescribe fluoride supplements.
Can a Child Have Too Much Fluoride?
It is possible for a child to have too much fluoride and we can chat to you about how much is required, including when to begin using fluoridated toothpaste. Very young children lack the ability to spit so we may recommend using fluoride-free toothpaste until they gain this ability and can spit out any excess.
